RED is the best tool I've found for this, since it handles directories with nothing but junk in them (Thumbs.db, .DS_Store), lets you permanently protect directories from deletion, shows a nice tree view, etc. I got it working in Windows 7 using the compatibility troubleshooter thing, but it doesn't seem fully compatible.
