    • Discontinued "It has been five years, the software has stagnated (due in no small part to my becoming discouraged by this one profiteer who trumped me, stole much of my traffic and bumped my site down to the second result when you search for "Gimpshop"). I assumed the guy would just give it up as I sadly let the project stagnate, but that hasn't happened." | Source: http://ask.metafilter.com/144788/What-are-my-intellectual-property-rights-here

I use Paint.NET as my preferred paint tool in Windows. Pixelmator, my favorite on Mac, is a lot better in every way.

Not so much an alternative to PhotoShop, but a real (and welcome) alternative to PaintShop Pro for the hundreds of quick image edits that most of us need in our daily work.

Pixelmator Didn't Get 'Er Done for me. While I like the photo editing, the creative ways you can use type in Photoshop simply can't be beat. I realize the interface is a kludge from years of upgrades/changes/whatever but PixelMater just couldn't do type as well as Adobe. I wish it would, I love editing photos in PixelMater or even iPhoto better than I do in Photoshop.

Amazing to use in general. A simplified tool-set that has been constantly and aggressively refined and added to since its beginnings makes for an approachable editing application with powerful features at your fingertips. It has improved considerably since release and the development staff are very responsive.
