The NirSoft suite is a must have for any Windows user. The clean streamlined interface is a refreshing change from the usual obfuscation of preforming Windows tasks. I will concede that the tools can be used for hacking but am of the opinion that everyone should have a copy on a thumb-drive.

Of course it's a password stealer!
That's the whole point!
To discover lost / forgotten passwords... that's why anti-virus detect them.

Of course it can also be used to evil... but the idea is to recover lost passwords in the system.

WARNING. Some tools in this package might pose a security risk if used without the consents of the PC owner. They can be used to read system passwords (e.g. dialup password) that are usually not easily accessible and hidden from the user. Many Anti-Virus vendors classify them as Riskware (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riskware) or 'HackTools'. And while downloading and running these tools does NOT cause any harm to your PC, the tools might be used for malicious activity by other users of the PC or during remote attacks to your PC. If you are unsure, we recommend to delete the tools listed in the section 'Password Recovery Utilities' from your file system - if you are using an Anti-Virus program with On-Access scanner it will most likely report and quarantine those tools upon installation anyway.

True - these are good points, and users come first ;-) I felt that you (Venom88) were being a bit strong on the accusation part, and I felt the software was good enough to deserve a defense.

I agree with Ola.
Considering that we can't control if this software is a false positive or a true one (it isn't opensource) we'll inform the users that it's suspicious at least.

I'm do not know so much about false positives but i think the users of alternative to should get some basic info that these application could be harmful if you do not know what you are doing. The best would be if we could include a link and some info where you can go and get some more info about these tools and make up your own mind about if they are sage or not.

There must be some reason why scanners report them as trojans and so on?

Honestly, a lot of the programs can be used maliciously, and many scans simply reflect that. Though you do bring up a good point, and my answer is yes. When I said do your own research, I didn't mean do another scan with the same scanners as the last user who was simply freaked by the results. I meant look up who Nir Sofer is, and figure out what he's all about. Test the programs in a virtual machine, or a sandbox if you really don't trust them. I've been using NirSoft programs for a long time, and you may be apathetic to my reputation, but I trust NirSoft. Here's the first step: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Nir+Sofer

Is it possible that 34 antivirus on 39 ( scan updated on 30 august 2010 ) make all false positives? http://www.virustotal.com/file-scan/report.html?id=d152bd26707116bead8d31118dea4b58e74d362cc1d861f4970516b4d82ead50-1283175616

If you knew anything about NirSoft, many of Nir's programs are scanned and found as viruses, but are all false positives. I have used, and continue to use many of these tools and I'm an expert with viruses (it's been my job for quite some time), and I, with many other professionals can attest to the cleanliness and usefulness of these programs. Please do your own research before listening to flamers and inexperienced users.
