about Ning Jun 2011

I only discovered Ning very recently, in June 2010. The site offers a good mix of features for creation of groups for like-minded people or those sharing a common interest. As I write this (June 23) there is a FREE service for low usage groups.

Sadly, though, as of July 20th, Ning will cease to be free, with a minimum monthly fee of US$2.95 or US$19.95 per year for a reduced feature list and no more than 150 users. Not a massive amount of money, but it's going to put many of the smaller groups off using Ning's service. Other charge bands offer more features for more money.

If you're considering using an online group, you may get more for your money (and greater flexibility) by going for a more generic web hosting service like HostGator which offers a wide range of server software covering a wide range of uses.
