Most people would say that Bitwarden is the best alternative to LastPass. It's fully open source and free for most people. You can even share passwords between two people, a feature that is usually not in the free plan in these types of apps. Bitwarden does offer some premium features especially geared towards business, such as setting up teams of more than two users and sharing passwords.

Obviously, Bitwarden supports all basic features that LastPass has, like auto-fill passwords in browsers and apps, end-to-end encryption, tools to check for weak or compromised passwords, etc.

But the main benefit of Bitwarden is that it's open source and that you have the option to either self-host the server on-premise or using their cloud.

KeePass has been around forever and feels a bit old-school in its design. It's still in active development though, and if you are into classic UIs and love to fiddle around with plugins and settings, then KeePass may be for you. It might not be the password manager you would install on your mom's machine, though.

Compared to LastPass, the main difference is that KeePass is open source and not a "cloud" solution. You can sync KeePass via a network, but you would have to store your password database in some file storage somewhere (for example, Dropbox or Nextcloud).

You also need to keep in mind that for it to work on an iPhone for example, you might need to install a KeePass-compatible app. Again, it's a bit messy and not a simple plug-n-play system like LastPass, Bitwarden or 1Password.

KeePassXC is a fork of KeePassX (which itself is a fork of KeePass) and is compatible with the KeePass database (KDBX). It was originally built because KeePass was for Windows only, so KeePassXC was built for Linux (and Unix), Mac and Windows natively and uses Qt instead of WPF (a Windows only framework) and C# . The UI feels more modern than KeePass; otherwise, they are kind of similar. One major difference between KeePass and KeePassXC is that it does not have support for plugins, so keep that in mind.

For a novice, all these KeePass clones can appear a bit messy and, honestly, if you do not care about trying to figure out what is best for you, you should probably just go with Bitwarden or 1Password if you want to replace LastPass.

1Password was Mac only for a long time, but for quite some time now, it has been multi-platform with support for most majors OSs like Windows, Linux and Chrome OS. The major drawback of 1Password is probably that there is no free version, so you have to pay for it. It may be worth it though, especially if you are a Mac / iOS person. It's a beautiful app and you won't miss any features from LastPass.

You also have more flexibility when it comes to how you want to store your passwords. You can use 1passwords own servers or you can store the database on your computer or an online storage of your own choice. With LastPass, you have to store the passwords in their cloud.

Dashlane is probably most similar to LastPass in terms of being proprietary software that keeps your password in the cloud. The pricing is also very similar. What differences it is mainly UI and UX. Dashlane is a bit more accessible and clean and probably a bit less daunting for new users.

In terms of number of features, LastPass probably wins, but in general, they are very similar.

  9. Enpass icon
     83 likes

Enpass is similar to Keepass, but it's not open source and it's not free (though it has a free plan, it is very limited). And, depending on if you see it as a pro or a con, Enpass does not provide the service to store your password database in the cloud. If you want to sync your passwords between devices, you have to use an online storage service of your choice.

The main reasons to choose Enpass over KeePass if you want an offline password manager are that it looks good and is less complicated to set up.
