Jing

Free with limited functionality by Techsmith | Link to website

Jing is a screencasting software launched in 2007 as Jing Project by the TechSmith Corporation. An URL is automatically created and can be shared with others to view or access the uploaded file. You can use the image tools to add text, highlight existing text, or add an arrow or a rectangle to annotate your capture. With Jing you can take captures quicker than with similar applications... Quirky but works

Negative Review by ANDREW_CC about Jing Nov 2011

I can't say I'm in love with the design. It's a bit unintuitive - aching to experimental UIs of the late 90s and early 2000s. Reminded me of software such as Sonique music player.

But it works better than other screen capture programs.

Jing is the best screenshot app of the world - but Jing portable would be still better That Jing and TechSmith are the number 1 of all screenshot-apps of the world is shown in the number of LIKES on AlternativeTo.net. Today in most workplaces many users do not have admin rights and it is a good solution to use portable apps. The best portable screenshot app, that I know, is GreenShot (1), but GreenShot (2) has no internet publication feature as Jing has. Since you can get a free SugarSync account (3) starting with 2.5GB (only until Dec.2010) and growing up to 10GB and more for free, it is very attractive to use nearly all apps as portable apps, and you need not update the apps twice, at home and in the job. You use the same portable apps at home and in the job with all settings equal. If Jing would launch a portable app this would be very fine, but could have a little problem with the proxy setting, which is mostly different at home / in the job. This could be solved with the executing folder in the Jing calling link. The definition file with the Jing proxy settings should be situated in this executing folder, which can be selected in the calling link. Another solution could be, that Jing gets the proxy settings from the favourite web browser automatically.
