Comment by Mary about iTunes CopyTrans Manager Jul 2011

Thx to this page, I finally found a great alternative to iTunes that runs on my netbook without slowing down everything! Started to sync my iPod and iPhone only with this tool and will soon (waiting for iOS 5) :) uninstall iTunes from my Desktop. Thanks again! Oh, what I'm talking about? -> http://alternativeto.net/software/copytrans-manager/about

You should have tagged Copytrans in this post aswell. But awesome to hear that you have found a great alternative to iTunes. Apple really have to do a total makeover of iTunes.

Crap.
I usually try to remain objective in my reviews, but seriously... this is bad.

It is not hard to deduce that I use foobar2000, but I would honestly recommend Windows Media Player (I will get to the OS X version in a bit) over this.
It is expensive, buggy, slow, restrictive... the only reason to use this is if you have an iPod... Oh wait! Amarok and Winamp have native iPod support and foobar2000 has support via "iPod Manager for foobar2000" And just in case you don't like any of those, just go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ComparisonofiPodmanagers

Albeit, I can say from my (limited) experience that the program does run smoother on Mac OS X, but it still either can't register or sometimes even deletes metadata (Artist, album, cover art, etc.). The store is still more expensive than Amazon mp3, the files you obtain still have a DRM code (which limits conversion, use, etc.) and if you put music on an iPod using iTunes, you cannot transfer the music from the iPod to another computer... or even the SAME COMPUTER after reinstalling the operating system.

Also if you are older than 13, they can sell your personal information...

So please, don't use it. Seriously.

I'm been upgrading everything to ALAC and wondered if there's a quick way to select all old mp3s for deletion because a superior ALAC version exists.

I use it (owning iPods, now an iPhone) but i certainly don't like it, my experience with it on windows has been one of a buggy and forever changing interface, an inability to open & other open formats properly (flac, ogg, etc), heavy memory and cpu usage, and massive updates for a media player (although they have shrank recently - they used to be near 100mb). Frankly unless you want it for syncing a device or your using mac os I'd recommend pretty much anything else.

From Wikipedia:

In June, 2010, Apple updated its general privacy policy for the iTunes Store and iOS4 supported devices, revealing that it could and would collect real-time location-based information on users ages 13 and over. The revised policy states that Apple has the right to share this information with 3rd parties who provide services to the customer, including advertising and promotion services. Apple also states that "it may be necessary" to provide this [real-time] information in response to "requests from public and governmental authorities within or outside your country of residence or if [Apple] determines that for purposes of national security, law enforcement, or other issues of public importance, disclosure is necessary or appropriate"...."Additionally, in the event of a reorganization, merger, or sale we may transfer any and all personal information we collect to the relevant third party." The revised policy does not make any distinction between warrant-based and warrantless searches, nor provide what criteria would trigger the sharing of personal real-time information with government entities, nor allow an opt-out for the location-based information.

Need another reason to do not use iTunes? here is: Winamp.

I tested it on Windows and Os X and it is the same program, it's seriously lacking of features and format support (no wavepack, flac, ogg vorbis and stuff). It also doesn't have watch folders, is really bad when it comes to advanced tagging (no tag from filenames, no multiple tracks renaming via patterns and so on). It's a good-looking program with half the features of the the competitors.

This program also managed to kill the metadata of too much songs in my library and some tracks were lost forever and impossible to retrieve anywhere these days because they're too rare.

If you want a really complete library manager, try helium (my favorite) or mediamonkey. These are not free but worth the money and in conjunction with tag&rename (paid) or mp3tag (free) you will be ready for any eventuality.
