Most of us understand the allure of Twitter. That allure is reproduced at identi.ca with similar functionality (hashtags, retweets, etc), except identi.ca is free and open-source. More specifically, identi.ca is an implementation of status.net, which is free and open-source. Anybody can implement status.net on their own server; identi.ca exists for those that just want a microblogging account. Anyway, other glories of identi.ca are that you can log in with an OpenID account, you can easily set it up to forward your statuses to Twitter and Facebook and you can joing common-interest groups & broadcast to them using the exclamation mark tag. The populace of identi.ca is currently a bunch of linux users, since they gravitate towards the FLOSS principle. I like it and will continue to use it to rob Twitter blind!
