HandBrake is an open-source, multithreaded video transcoder- it converts digital media from one format to another, compressing the files in the process. Handbrake can rip encrypted DVDs with libdvdcss (libdvdcss is installed with VLC media player on Mac OS X, or AnyDVD/DVD 43 on Windows). Handbrake supports: -Any Blu-ray or DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD, and some .VOB, .m2ts, and .TS files. You can use it for encrypted DVD's (legal at times in the US) if you copy a dll into it (you don't need to buy AnyDVD) see https://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=16670#p78021

I think Handbrake can decrypt DVDs if you have VLC installed, too.

The interface is so annoying, I'm surprised that anyone uses this program. I double checked if I downloaded the right program. Now let's hope I can find something better in the alternatives list.

Best tool for creating mp4 files, can handle every source file I throw at it. Files that SUPER and Videora fumbled with audio delays, converted perfectly with Handbrake. And the only freeware tool that seems to be able to handle m2ts files.

I'd recommend downloading one of the "nightly builds" from the forum, has a lot more features.

Handbrake is really out of date and too complicated. Use Freemake. Freemake is where it's at.

Not an alternative in Linux. Visiting the Handbrake website you see a note stating: "0.9.4 is no longer available due to compatibility issues with the newer version of gnome."

So unless you use an old, outdated version of Linux don't bother with this.

I've removed some of the clutter in Handbrake's description; it was almost completely unreadable for anybody who isn't familiar with tech jargon. However, I'm no expert, so feel free to fix anything in the information box that looks wrong.

Anyways, Handbrake is a great tool for shrinking the size of your media library. It's all that's stopping my hard drive from running out of space by next week.

Amazing that it is free.

Amazing that it is free. A must to get movies onto iPod and iPad and iPhone. However, mpg to mp4 transcoding on a Mac was fruitless for me. (Corrupt file.)
