Not exactly a firewall ...

How can you define rules for a given application?

  • YOU CAN NOT! (only some pre-configured "apps", which are not apps, only ports)
  • only IP tables, services and port ranges...

Until you can't specify individually rules for programs you can forget security, what you do with these "firewalls" is: you are opening ports for EVERY software which want to communicate on that port. I know, linux users use OpenSource Software mostly that's why they don't need firewall (they say so)... The problem is: Every software based on this trust but linux could & and should be more secure, trust is fragile nowadays.

Why can't you :

  • choose a program
  • set the port that it can use,
  • set the direction (in or out) or set a service to it if the program needs it ?
