Does the trick

about Greenshot and scrot · · 1 Helpful

Coming from Linux, I missed scrot -s a lot. Now I can deal with image cropping easily.
Plus, Greenshot is Open Source, which is great if you asked me.

Why is this app so hot?

I was concerned about screenshot apps for years, Greenshot is not that outstanding.
I think it is like Piriform software, just good marketing and good luck.

GreenShot is my favorite

about Greenshot · · 2 Helpful

greenshot is by far my favorite screen shot software that i have ever used, with the past 2 software i was searching for some features which is unnecessary but will make my life a lot more easier and do things a lot more simple and fast, with GreenShot i find it all, the essential, the additions , the extra addition, itis simply super fantastic, yet super simple, in tiny little package.

Nice app

about Greenshot · · 1 Helpful

I'm the guy who initially translated it to French. This app evolved a lot since then. The only thing I would like to see is a full Window scroll capture for every app, not only IE. Of course if it would have video as suggested in some comments it would be fine but maybe they should do a separate app for that.

Do not agree with the person saying that size doesn't matter and I especially disagree on the argument that person/groups that emphasis on their app size would not code well. I think it's the opposite. Being able to make an app that reaches to eat the least possible capacity demands a great knowledge in development. So size somehow matter even if it doesn't matter as much as functionality.

Really cool capture tool

about Greenshot and Snagit · · 1 Helpful

Awesome alternative for SnagIt. And it's open-source, too. Beautiful!
Love it.

I am using the lastest Build of Greenshot, v1.0.3 RC3 by now.

I tried many captures, and this is not outstanding at all. I think why it's well-known like this is just some magazines or websites recommended it.

For free ones, try PicPick, FastStone Capture v5.3, DuckCapture, Ptr Scr.

Why pay for SnagIt?

about Greenshot and CamStudio · ·

Greenshot does everything I need, except for video capture, and I can use the free CamStudio for that.

I like it.

about Greenshot and ZScreen · ·

I like it. It's lightweight, offers the most useful options (like (last) crop shot and window shot) and the built-in image editor can easily crop images. What I miss in comparition to ZScreen (Open Source too) for example, is to select not only whole windows but elements of windows, like bars or dialoges and seperators - this is what I miss with Greenshot.

Try pressing PrintScreen and than space, this will get you into a mode which does what you want.

Who cares about space on harddisk? That's completely irrelevant in 2012. 3.2 kB is something like 0.000000596% of a modern hard drive.

Jing neeeds 12983 kB, Greenshot needs only 1851 kB, not 3.2kB as endolith wrote. Jing needs 7 times more space on harddisk, is not portable, and has no OCR function. Many users like these top advantages of Greenshot, e.g. see the positive comment by alexlehm about Greenshot from Jul 2010 "the program is reasonably small" or the positive comment by klischee about Greenshot ZScreen Nov 2010: "I like it. It's lightweight".
If Jing needs 7 times more space than Greenshot, it should have 7 times more functions. But the contrary is true: Greenshot has much more functions. Many experienced users make backups of the disk with the operating system and the programs every week and is comfortable to have more than only one backup-version. So the space demand of an app is multiplied in real usage incuding the backups, and it is recommendable to use for each purpose the app with the highest ratio function/space demand or the app with most functions. GreenShot has both: most functions and lowest space demand. Because of this is has the most likes: GreenShot / Jing / Jet ScreenShot: 127 / 101 / 17. Since GreenShot has an OCR-function I only use GreenShot, because I need the OCR-function every week.

The point is that it DOESN'T MATTER how much space it uses. One program uses a more efficient compiler than the other, who cares? It doesn't matter if it's 7 times as much of your hard drive. Even 100 times is a negligible amount. Worrying about a tiny amount of disk space is nonsensical, and any company who markets this as a benefit of their program probably isn't good at writing software.

I find this focus on disk space puzzling. It's small, but who cares? Testing Greenshot, I found it used 10x the memory the capture tool I was using previously. It's still lightweight (screen capture tools aren't exactly memory hogs), and looks like it has great features, but... disk space? Really?

I agree with you, that the disk space comparison is only one of many differences, and it is not very important (Only 1 point in the assessment). But I mentioned it, because it is a difference and Jing needs 7 times more diskspace and has not so many features. Every reader for himself/herself can decide, how much this criterion is important for him/her.
In my comparison the weigth of other criteria is much higher:

The most important (new) advantage of GreenShot IMO is: OCR send Text to ClipBoard (6 points) and I also like the availability as a portable app, because many users are not allowed to install Jing or other not-portable apps on company computers.
In our company I recommended GreenShot as a standard GreenShot tool and was succesful with this proposal. GreenShot now is the standard screenshot tool in our big international company with more then 40000 employees all over the world.

Because of this now the availability as a portable app is not so important for me than before, because standard software tools naturally are allowed to be installed.

I especially like the concept of plug-ins, the program is reasonably small, but can be extended with additional output modes.
