dropbox

Negative Comment by User5710472 about Dropbox Mar 2012

what did this software do to my computer? everything was running fine until i downloaded dropbox. now everything slowed to a crawl. uninstalled dropbox - things are better but my computer is still slow.

my advice - beware of Dropbox. and Dropbox also has a mind of its own. it still uploaded file i did not pick for upload.

in my opinion this is invasive software.

Well, as long as we're telling personal anecdotes, I want to point out that I've installed Dropbox on 3 computers (two PCs and a Hackintosh) and they're all working fine. So your mileage may vary.

I can confirm that Dropbox is fairly light on resources, especially if you are judicious about which folders to sync. I've never had it do anything unexpected and love that you can get an extra 500 megabytes of free space for each referral, via links like: http://db.tt/ct5gl0Me

This app seems to be quite popular but i don't really understand why?

I would prefer to use a more sophisticated software for full PC control from a remote PC like Ammyy Admin http://alternativeto.net/software/ammyy-admin/ or LogMeIn http://alternativeto.net/software/logmein/ which are a way more powerfull and can give you a set of auxiliary features dropbox can't.

So can anyone explain me where is the catch in dropbox?

My Dropbox is currently @ 24 GB in free space. It's drop dead simple, well integrated & highly accessible from anywhere [PC, laptop, phone, tablet, microwave, bionics]. For me, it's the flagship cloud data synchronisation product of the 21st century. It'd be cool if it was like another service like say 'Google Docs', where you could have higher levels of collaboration as well, instead of just file sharing. Although, I guess there'd be too much bloat making its way into the install.

I'd also like it if the Dropbox team could allow public file sharing to be more flexible as well as including external folders outside of the primary one. There's is a concern about security for sensitive information. For that, I say get 'TrueCrypt' & go nuts.

Dropbox remains as a solution to the archaic filesystems that we suffer. I would much rather a highly visual/efficient system, high production experience with my explorers/file managers. This doesn't have to leave newcomers dazed and the competent frustrated. There's no reason for Windows to still have the same stupid explorer that they've had forever. In this regard, Apples approach to dealing with files is much better and is one of the only reasons I like OSX over Windows. However, if you need the time-wasting file sorting mechanisms such as the one provided by Windows and a couple Linux OS, Dropbox is your man.

SpiderOak is another competitive app to dropbox (especially in terms of pricing). Never tried SugarSync or SkyDrive but I've heard good things.

Review Dropbox

Comment by JohnTucker about Dropbox Oct 2011

I know a lot of people use the free version of Dropbox and are trying to get more free space by referring others. I know on my website I get quite a few comments with referral codes. I usually delete them but if people are willing to write a little review of Dropbox there is a website I found that will place their referral code on the site. Check out http://reviewdropbox.com/ and leave a review of Dropbox along with your referral code.

Thought it might help those looking to help increase their free space.
