DriverPacks are collections of drivers intended to be integrated into a Windows installation disc/image (aka slipstreaming). This allows for automated installation of drivers during the installation process. Your (standard) Windows installation disc doesnt have drivers for all hardware, and over time the drivers it does have get out-of-date. But keep in mind that the only reason for an alternative not to be valid is if it doesn't share common functionality with DriverPacks.
