If you are re-tweeting a comment that is already pushing close to 140 and want to add something then you are obviously going to break the 140 barrier - this is where deck.ly really came in useful.

The alternatives sound great for original tweets but, without the mess of cut & paste, don't seem to cater for the re-tweet.
