Chatbotmaker was created to answer a pedagogical problem. Typically, English language learners are given only limited opportunities for communicative conversation practice during class time. So, we asked the simple question, “How can we give our students speaking practice outside of the classroom?” The answer, we think, is to combine Chrome’s robust speech recognition engine with the webcam on your computer to create and converse with speech-recognition-enabled chatbots. What’s a chatbot? A chatbot is an artificial conversation partner. Early versions were simple desktop programs that would respond to text input with either a text answer or another question to simulate chatroom-like exchanges. The conversations, though impressive from a programming perspective, were tedious and annoying. Later chatbots have used animated avatars and text-to-speech engines to create computer mediated conversations with artificially intelligent characters. While somewhat more realistic than earlier versions, these speech-enabled chatbots are never as engaging as real conversations with real people.
