LOVE IT

Positive Comment by chained about avast! Free Antivirus May 2012

Have been using since 2006, from the recommendation of a fellow gamer, and have yet to turn back. I have the android version installed on my rooted LG Optimus (which has a custom ROM), and REALLY like that (blocking spam texts for the win), and have also used it on Ubuntu for a home web server with apache2.

keeps my computer clean, doesn't slow it down, and sand-boxes weird programs that may try to hijack and/or install trojans to my computer, and it has blocked a few hacker injection attempts to my computer ( I awoke from a dead sleep at 2 am to my computer shouting "threat detected!", because I forgot to lower the volume after playing some video games, and left my computer on lol). It has also saved me from mistyped url's, on more than one occasion. The web rep supports 3 out of 4 of my favorite browsers (opera not supported), and it supports IE. OH, AND I CAN MAKE IT TALK LIKE A PIRATE.

PROBLEM? I think not :D

Sorry, another resource hog. I tried to shut down pretty much all the shields and it still hangs Firefox 4 for several seconds while starting up. Funny thing is also that despite claims that it wont scan things (at least exe files) more than once a session it keeps doing the same thing over and over gain, at least with regard to Firefox. I guess this could be some isolated glitch with a specific software but I'm not impressed.

The last sentence (first part) is on the money. Something about your system is funny. I've tried several AV options over the years, on about a dozen PCs. Did a survey of all the major free ones recently. Avast was the fastest, with the lowest RAM usage, and zero annoying ads (if you set things properly). Avira was good, but had the most ads and annoying pop-ups/slide-out-ads. AVG is good, and has command line options that are crucial if you want to set things up in Task Scheduler, which I only wish Avast had, since it's the best.

One more note: these were all Windows PCs.

I got a redirect virus, and instead of rooting it out from an obvious .exe file, it kept zapping every webpage that I opened. Also, it's difficult to turn off when preferred, so I end up installing it, using it once, and uninstalling it.

I am satisfied user of avast antivirus for more than 10 years. And I can recommend it to everyone who seeks good and fast protection, with low system requirements.

I've run this on several of my personal computers for years, and have liked it. It's had its quirks, from version to version, but generally scores favorably in security tests and isn't too bad or a resource hog. I've strayed away, just a little, to Microsoft Security Essentials - which runs better on some of my aging hardware - but Avast! is my go-to for my own personal PCs.

Highly recommended

Positive Comment by Boucha about avast! Free Antivirus Dec 2010

Highly recommended: I've been using the free Avast home edition for almost 2 years now, I can't recall having any serious issues since, it's unobtrusive & resource friendly, I build computer systems for Family & Friends and I always make sure Avast is installed, updated & ready to go.

Truly brilliant on Windows but an absolute dog on linux. Its a good thing that Linux is more secure than windows because you cant get this to work without adding extra code to allow for the large update sizes.
