Since many apps have overlapping functionality, I'm constantly finding apps that alternativeto says is an alternative but, in fact, it only has one out of 10 features of the "alternative" app which is useless. There should be a "complete/direct alternative" column and a "similar/related functionality" column or there will be a constant war going on with people saying yes it is no it isn't yes it is not it isn't... |

I agree with this. In addition, there should be some distinction between desktop applications and application servers (redmine for example). |

They already have a OS drop down menu which could easily just have "application server" added to it along with linux, windows, online, android and the other choices already there. Might I suggest a separate thread to discuss that so it gets the attention it deserves? |

The server thing is a good idea. I haven't thought about that, will add it to our lists and discuss it more! About the other "related" software and so on we have thought about that a lot. Right now our philosophy is NOT to add related apps as alternatives. We just wrote some stuff about what we think about alternatives here: http://alternativeto.net/discussions/faq/6208/what-should-be-an-alternative-to-what- |

I brought this up exactly because your "philosophy" isn't working. Everything is getting linked to everything making it more and more difficult to find what you're actually looking for. |

Yea, but that is why we are improving our "suggest incorrect alternatives" feature all the time. I think it's kind of hard to make the distinction between related and alternative as well. One feature could be that if an alternative has been removed once we could in some way "flag" it so it warns if somebody is trying to add that same alternative again or something. Will think about something like that. And a "related" feature might come. It's not on top of our priority list though :) |
