I would like to see it be possable to be able to aded computer game to the database and to be able to add alterntive to them like

Ola-image

You can add a game now if you want to! In a couple of month we will also add a separate "version" where you could add games!

We can add games? Since when? 0_0

Been there for a while .. and a couple of more :)

I could imagine problems with that. I mean, what really makes one game an "alternative" to another? It's not the same as with regular software; for example, a person could consider every MMORPG in existence an "alternative" to WoW.

Of course it's not as simple as adding alternatives to software (not always that simple really). But if you really like let's say "Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3" and have played it until you're bored with it, then you will love to find loads and loads of similar games even if they're not a 100% match. And with user contribution through comments and "likes" you can easily filter out the most popular ones. And you will also be able to search cross-platform or even "cross-device type" (in the future) like "Find free C&C alternatives for iPhone.

And find free and open source alternatives. Like FreeCIV and OpenTTD and so on. We think it could be useful ..

interesting, this is a good way to broaden alternativeto. Soon we'll probably have movies lol. So will we be seeing a gaming platform category? I'm really liking the idea.

i think games alt is useless, why? because: check gaming websites like: gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/residentevil5/index.html?tag=result%3Btitle%3B2 for example resident evil 5, then check the: GAMES YOU MAY LIKE. you can find lots of alts.

OmgItsTheSmartGuy-image

@1: You can find lots of alternatives to software on Google too, but that doesn't make AlternativeTo useless.

However, I still think alternatives to games are way too vague.

@omg: i mean for gaming only.

OmgItsTheSmartGuy-image

Well, my point was that just because there are other websites that do (more or less) the same thing, that doesn't make AlternativeTo useless. After all, you can use Google to find game alternatives too.

I can agree with you but i also think that it doesnt hurt. I was actually using AlternativeTo this weekend when we had a LAN and we wanted a free alternative to CS.

http://alternativeto.net/software/counter-strike/

The thing is that it really doesn't hurt to have it. It doesn't make the rest of AlternativeTo worse in any way right?

I suggest offering alternatives to anything and everything. I like Burger King hamburgers. Alternatives? McDonald's? Sure. I'll try it.

  • Internet service provider alternatives to AT&T? (Comcast)
  • Alternatives to Reddit.com? (Digg.com, Slashdot.com)
  • Alternatives to VPS providers like Linode.com? (Elastichosts.com)
  • Alternatives to the Pirate Party? Alternatives to the politician Ron Paul? (Not voting)
  • Alternatives to Atheism? (Humanism, Buddhism, Capitalism)
  • Alternatives to impressing women with a Ferrari? (Hummer, Porsche, Armani suit, penis enlargement equipment, sock in pants, coloring your credit card black)
  • Alternatives to a university degree? (Khanacademy.org, Wikipedia, Google, Yahoo Answers)
  • Alternatives to having children? (Making a career, becoming a crime/war lord, eating candy)
  • Alternatives to eating candy/pizza? (Shopping, playing computer games, drinking alcohol)
  • Alternatives to being popular? (Joining local chess club getting love and respect from peers)
  • Alternatives to fish soup? (other fish soup recipes, other recipes, wtf I don't know)
  • Alternatives to boxing? (Boxercise, weight lifting, street fighting, joining the local Army)
  • Alternatives to living in Sweden? (Iceland, Holland, Norway, Guantanamo)
  • Alternatives to becoming a fireman (rejected by fireman school)? (Becoming a fire starter, cop)
  • Alternatives to renting prostitutes? (Getting account with World of Warcraft)
  • Alternatives to WoW? (Getting laid. For free)
  • Alternatives to IKEA? (Craigs list, Ebay)
  • Alternatives to insomnia? (Milk and cookies. Or beer)

The imagination sets the limit.

Please implement categories for all the above. Kthxbai.

AltTo will only grow as the alternative list grows. I'd be happy to have the gaming section, as Ola said, free alt to CS, you would usually have to do some googling and forum digging.

The first game i noticed on here was minecraft, i didnt know it even existed until then, and look how it has exploded since then. If we can just get more people on AltTo, we will have many great apps that nobody previously knew.

Although, i do think that AltTo should stay somewhat focused on electronics and software. The niche recommendation(PC hardware, jobs) markets are tough to break into and already have a site for them, and they arent very big anyway.

Great posts!

We would love to provide "an alternative to everything" but we also really really think that we should really support the thing we list alternatives to so that we have some "edge" compared to for example Wikipedia.

Like with software today where you can filter by platforms and license and stuff like that. For each new "category" we will implement we would like to have these kind of features. That's why games is kind of easy since they are basically software but for entertainment. Websites is also a thing we want to support in the future.

Both games and (some) websites are allowed to be added now but we will make explicit support for them in 2011!

i think the best think you should focus on is accurate alts, instead of focusing on more categories.

@Ola: I'm pretty sure todu was being sarcastic, or at least he was being sarcastic on the 2nd half of his post.

Ola-image

Yes! But we have thought in the same directions ;)

I think games warrant a completely new website.
