One of the ugliest GUIs I have ever seen...why would you design an app around it?
When paired with the k-lite codec pack, Media Player Classic becomes an ultra-lightweight media player that can handle anything thrown at it. Almost any feature in this program can be customized to your liking. When you want a customizable program that will load to play your video files faster then most other popular choices, MPC is the way to go.
I suggest pairing media player classic with Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) - actually, CCCP comes with Media Player Classic. I haven't had any issues with software bloat since. CCCP was designed to reduce codec bloat.
@anithinks more like Media Player Classic comes with CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net).The current stable is quite old as of now, I'd suggest getting the latest beta (which is quite stable and a lot faster) at http://www.cccp-project.net/beta/.
@nicmoon Sure, the GUI is quite ugly, but you spend a lot more time looking at video in full screen than actually using the GUI (if you're anything like me, that is...). Superfluous GUIs like Windows Media Player, ZoomPlayer and any DVD player (even VLC) is pointless and just makes the thing slower in my opinion.
I used Windows Media Player a lot of Windows, but it gave me problems after a while and this was a nice small program that could play all my videos quickly and painlessly. and I dont remember for sure... what is called right now but I think... I used this program with another program to let me upsample videos when I played it on my big screen TV.
Stable Media Player. But VLC Player offers more choises for multi media entertainment.

It is very versatile, light weight, clean interface, has many complex functions in the back-end if you like to tweak it but simple front-end to not frighten users away.
