HIGHLY customizable and one of the fastest audio players available, Foobar2000 is a wonderful alternative if you are looking for something lightweight that will play your audio files without taking too much memory. It is also easily customizable with a devoted community of followers and plugins galore! Although I've never tried it, I know iPod support is available as a plugin.

For Windows, Foobar2000 all the way. Very fast, "lite" on resources. Tabbed playlists, filled with cool options, plugins available for last.fm, etc...

Songbird is good, but too "sluggish;" gets second place for having Songkick addon.

I used Winamp for almost 10 years (from the Winamp 2 era up until late 2009) simply because I couldn't find another full-featured audio player that also had a user-friendly library interface as well as the plethora of optional features and customization.... And then I found Foobar2000. It does everything I used Winamp for and then some, including ripping CD's, file conversion, album art display, quick metadata tag edits, searching through my massive audio library, and, oh yeah, actually listening to the songs! Best of all, where Winamp took several seconds or even a minute or two to load up even when using Winamp Agent, Foobar2000 always opens instantly. As long as you don't mind going without the hundreds of thousands of Winamp skins (which are a frivolous visual novelty that often just gets in the way), then you likely won't be disappointed.

As a side note, I also have iTunes, but only because I have an iPod and I don't want to put unofficial firmware on my iPod. If you've ever been frustrated with iTunes, or Windows Media Player or the Zune software for that matter, you should give Foobar2000 a try!

The only downfall of foobar2000 is that it's only available on Windows. Nothing can replace it.

Fast, native, highly costumizeable, a lot of plugins (for the GUI, web, additional audio codecs, ...) and a big community are the reasons why this my personal #1 audio player.

The best for me. Used winamp for a long time now, but Foobar beat it in so many ways
