    The best sync-solution out there!

I love love love syncplicity. 2 gb limit same as dropbox except rather than being stuck with a single folder you can choose whatever folders you want without changing your whole folder structure. It's a little less idiot proof, but setting up what you want to sync is quite simple and incredibly useful

@askj113 The feature to choose what folders to sync is in develop-mode right now.
    Maybe in the 1.0 version?

what the HELL is wrong with ubiquitous FTP?

    Nothing

    FTP predates the interweb

large (sets of) file(s) hosting services that do not support FTP uploads are

    USELESS

It is so simple to use and means I don't need to worry about going back and forth between work on my desktop and my laptop. Fantastic!

Fortunately the lack of FTP support for Dropbox doesn't prevent it from being a fantastic product. As a user of three machines on three different platforms, Dropbox has made my life so much easier. The real downside to DB is the cost per GB.

Simple, bullet-proof. If you're not a geek, and looking to back-up or transfer a few files (under the 2GB free limit), it doesn't get an easier.

Have no knowledge of whether it works or not due to the fact that the application won't install on my laptop. Completely useless so far.

You have to install software? That's a big pass. Something that offers fill control through a web browser capable of drag and drop and whatnot would be acceptable, or FTP like rigorous mentioned. I give this a big 'useless' as well. Hopefully there's another free alternative.

I like, use and recommend DropBox version 0.6.570. Advantage: in distinction from Gladinet, Live Mesh and TeamDrive it also works in our company ethernet network, where we use an internet connection with a HTTP proxy. But as a little disadvantage I see, that DropBox has no multilanguage support. DropBox WebSite and DropBox local installation support only english.

Until September 2009 I used GMX Uploadmanager ( http://alternativeto.net/desktop/gmx-file-storage/comments or http://help.gmx.com/storage/client/ ) with Windows XP, because in our Company Network with a HTTP Proxy internet connection, DropBox and TeamDrive (http://www.teamdrive.net) did not work. Since end of Oct.2009 DropBox also works with a HTTP Proxy internet connection. With DropBox (or TeamDrive) system does not slow down during synchronizing prozess as with GMX Upload-Manager.

Works very well -- very fast, and the most reliable of the sync services I've tried, including Syncplicity, SugarSync, and SpiderOak.

But I have a problem with its ultra-limited functionality: It only syncs one pre-selected "Dropbox" folder. To work around that, you have to install and use Windows hard link extensions, and then Dropbox doesn't always detect file changes. A bigger problem is that, unlike most other services, you can't choose the folders you want to sync on each computer. Everything is synced on every computer connected to your account. So if you have a bunch of stuff you want to back up from your home computer, but not download to your work computer -- sorry, look elsewhere.

Answer to Chthaos (4.11.09 12:16): With Live Mesh ( http://alternativeto.net/desktop/live-mesh/ ) You can sync not only one pre-selected "Dropbox" folder, but every free choosabele folder You like. As an additional advantage Live Mesh has 5GB (instead of 2GB with DropBox) free online storage. Little Disadvantage: Online Device Connecting ( https://www.mesh.com/Web/Devices.aspx ) with firefox gives the Error: Sorry, your web browser does not currently support Active X controls. This Active X control is only needed if you're trying to connect to a remote device from your Live Desktop. You can still connect to a remote device in your mesh by using the Live Mesh notifier on your device.

In Difference to SugarSync DropBox is not able to Sync Windows Mobile devices.
See, why SugarSync is different from DropBox, Box.net or MobileMe:

I've been really frustrated with SugarSync support and now they are charging when they just need to answer their support email and post some reasonable knowledgebase articles.

Looking into DB, I read that Mac files meta data are not accurately support which can cause some problems. What's the experience you all have with this?

I've not noticed any issues.. but again, best to ask on the Dropbox Forums

    @goterps
I have no experience with Mac, I use the Microsoft OS Windows XP and Vista and I like Windows 7 and "Windows Mobile 6". My experience with SugarSync, since I discovered it 3 days ago:
Because I use "Windows Mobile", I am quite thrilled, that I can read with "Windows Mobile" all SugarSync-files on my HTC P6500, what with "DropBox" was not possible. Incidentally, I'm usually with "DropBox" also very satisfied. I suggested to the SugarSync support, that Word-files, which were edited on SmartPhone, should be uploaded to the online-storage as a new feature, see:
    https://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D722797_054331_03610
After 1 hour came the answer, that it was flagged as a new feature. So I am very pleased with the support. It was a quick reaction, and now I must wait, until my wish will be realized.

Amazing application! Was able to sync a photo folder and share it with my brother-in-law in a matter of a minute or so. A free 2GB of storage, off-site back up solution. Great stuff.

Dropbox is an excellent product. Sync'ing to the web is fast and does not slow down the computer. If you have other computers on your LAN running Dropbox, the LANsync feature makes sync'ing almost immediate. The web site is great too, showing details of recent activity on your account and shared files and folders.

The free service provides 2GB space, but you can increase this to 5GB if you can get 12 referrals to sign up... each one gets you 250MB *and* the referred new customer also gets 250MB extra straight away.... An excellent policy by the Dropbox folks. If you're looking to sign-up, please use this link and get yourself (and me) the extra 250MB space: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTUyMjczODM5
